Çalık Enerji has been awarded a construction contract by General Company for Ports of Iraq ("GCPI") of a port rehabilitation project in Basra, Republic of Iraq, together with Mitsubishi Corporation.
During execution of this project, which Çalık Enerji will take a major role in EPC portion together with Gap İnşaat as the sub-contractor, Mitsubishi Corporation will be responsible for the overall project coordination as the prime contractor, and also supplying Japan based key products and facilities.
The objective of this project is to modernize the current industrial port by expanding the petrochemical product berth at Khor Al-Zubair Port and building a new service berth for working ships and service boats at Umm Qasr Port.
Execution of imperative port rehabilitation throughout Iraq is essential to meet the increasing demand in volume of trading in and out from Iraq for stable reconstruction of the country. This project contributes to approaching such goal, whereas Khor Al-Zubair Port and Umm Qasr Port being the only ports that are currently active at the 48km-coastline Iraq is facing between Iran and Kuwait.
